RASS IRATA Certification: Everything you need to know as a Level 3 Technician

IRATA RASS Certification: The Complete Guide for Level 3 Technicians
If you are a Technician IRATA Level 3, you know what it means to work at height with ropes. But there's a step further: becoming your team's security benchmark. The IRATA RASS certification is designed for exactly that. In this article, we explain what it is, who can obtain it, how the exam works and why more and more companies are demanding it in international projects.
What is the IRATA RASS certification?
The RASS (Rope Access Supervisor of Safety) is the official certification of IRATA International that accredits Level 3 Technicians as safety supervisors in rope access operations.
This is not just another technical certification. The RASS goes one step beyond the domain of vertical techniques: form for lead teams, manage risks in real time and ensure compliance with IRATA's Safe System of Work in the field.
A visible sign of this accreditation is that the certified technician's IRATA number appears preceded by an “S” — an internationally recognized score that distinguishes the supervisor from the rest of the team.
The certification is valid in all countries where IRATA operates, which opens up access to projects in the energy, construction, industry and mining sectors at a global level.

What is the difference between IRATA Level 3 and RASS?
This is the most frequently asked question. The answer is clear:
El IRATA Level 3 Technician is the most experienced professional in rope access techniques. He is able to perform complex jobs and oversee rescue operations.
El RASS Supervisor is the technician who, in addition to mastering the technical part, is trained to take responsibility for the safety of the entire team. He knows the IRATA Safe System of Work in depth, knows how to detect risks before they materialize, manages documentation, monitors facilities and ensures that each member of the team works within the required standards.
In practice, many international clients and companies demand the presence of a RASS in their projects. Having the “S” on your IRATA number isn't just recognition — it's a real competitive advantage in the labor market.
Who can become RASS certified?
The course is aimed exclusively at IRATA Level 3 Technicians that meet the following requirements:
- Current IRATA Level 3 certification at the start of the course
- Active registration on TechConnect, the official registration platform of IRATA
- IRATA Logbook in force, with the documented history of hours and jobs
- Minimum of 14 hours of training completed, followed by an online theory exam with eligible/unsuitable criteria
- Minimum age: 18 years old
These requirements are not arbitrary. The RASS trains people who already have real experience in the field. The solid technical foundation of Level 3 is essential to be able to assimilate and apply the advanced supervisory knowledge offered by this program.
What do you learn in the RASS course?
The program combines 2 days of theoretical training and 1 day of practical training, with the Pearson VUE online exam included at the end.
Theoretical part — 2 days
The theoretical part delves into the fundamentals of IRATA's Safe System of Work and the leadership competencies necessary to oversee safe operations:
- El Safe System of Work of IRATA: critical elements, documentation and supervisor responsibilities
- Field Safety Monitoring Techniques: How to securely manage teams in dynamic environments
- Risk Assessment Strategies: proactive identification of hazards before and during operation
- Adaptive rescue planning: Preparing for changing operating environments
- Leadership in pre-use inspections: evaluation of equipment, anchors and work areas
- Clear and effective communication: transmission of safety information to technicians and customers
Practical part — 1 day
The practical day transfers theoretical concepts to real work scenarios:
- Eligibility of access: access aptitude assessment and operational planning
- Work and rescue facilities: area preparation, anchorages, work lines and rescue areas
- Supervision of technicians: operational control, assignment of tasks and verification of maneuvers in the field
- Implementation of the Safe System of Work under real conditions
- Signage and beacon: delimitation of zones, access control and prevention of interference
