Quality Training in Wind Energy

What is the Global Wind Organization (GWO)?

The Global Wind Organization (GWO) is a non-profit organization that leads safety training for the wind industry. Founded by pioneering companies in the sector:

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy; Vestas Wind Systems; GE Renewable Energy; Ørsted; Nordex; Envision Energy.

GWO's mission is to establish and maintain international training standards. These standards ensure that wind industry workers receive appropriate education and can work safely and efficiently in diverse environments, both on land and at sea.

The importance of GWO lies in its commitment to the safety and well-being of workers, promoting a culture of safety that benefits the entire industry. With the rapid growth of the wind industry, the need for standardized, high-quality training is more critical than ever.

Main Objectives of GWO

  1. Worker Safety: The main objective of GWO is to improve worker safety in the wind industry. Through rigorous training standards, GWO seeks to reduce the risks of accidents and promote safe practices at work.
  2. Quality of Training: GWO ensures that training programs are of high quality, consistent and relevant to industry needs. This is achieved through the continuous evaluation and updating of training standards.
  3. Global Recognition: Promoting the adoption and global recognition of GWO training standards is crucial. This facilitates the mobility of workers between different regions and companies, ensuring that the skills acquired are recognized around the world.
  4. Industrial Collaboration: GWO encourages collaboration between companies, educational institutions and other key players. This collaboration is essential to continuously improve security standards and practices, adapting to new technologies and industry challenges.

Sectors in which GWO Works

  1. Onshore Wind Energy: GWO develops specific standards for the training of workers in onshore wind farms, addressing the unique risks and challenges of this environment. The training includes aspects such as safety in the handling of equipment, emergency procedures and rescue techniques.
  2. Offshore Wind Energy: In the offshore field, GWO focuses on the safety of workers in offshore wind installations. The training addresses extreme sea conditions, safe operation techniques and rescues at height and confined spaces on offshore platforms.
  3. Maintenance and Operations: GWO sets standards for training in wind turbine maintenance and operations. This ensures that workers are prepared to operate equipment, perform maintenance tasks safely and respond appropriately to emergencies.
  4. Construction and Installation: During the construction and installation phase of wind farms, safety training is crucial due to the complexity and hazards associated with these activities. GWO develops specific protocols to ensure safety in these environments.

5. Emergencies and Rescues: GWO includes training in first aid, rescue at height and rescue in confined spaces in its standards. This ensures that workers are prepared to respond effectively in emergency situations, minimizing risks and safeguarding lives.

Work Training on Land and Sea

The training provided by GWO covers both onshore and offshore work, ensuring comprehensive training for all aspects of the wind industry:

Ground Work (Onshore):

  • Safety and Equipment Management: Training in the safe use of tools and machinery in onshore wind farms.
  • Maintenance and Operations: Training in onshore wind turbine maintenance and operation procedures.
  • Construction and Installation: Specific safety protocols for the installation of turbines in terrestrial locations.

Emergency Procedures: Education in rescue and emergency procedures adapted to terrestrial environments.

Work at Sea (Offshore):

  • Extreme Conditions: Training to face extreme sea conditions, ensuring the safety of workers.
  • Marine Park Operation: Training in safe operation techniques in offshore wind farms.
  • Vessel Management: Vessel management and maritime transport instruction for safe access to offshore platforms.

Sea Rescue: Rescue techniques at height and confined spaces on offshore platforms, essential for safety at sea.
