IRATA, stands for Industrial Rope Access Trade Association, is the most recognized international certification for work at height and rope access. Obtaining it will allow you to work in wind farms, offshore platforms, industries, construction, structure maintenance and technical inspection services. In addition, it increases your employment opportunities and improves your salary, since many companies only accept technicians with IRATA certification.

How IRATA certification and its three levels work

IRATA training consists of three levels. Level 1 is aimed at technicians who are new to vertical work. With this level, the technician can perform work under direct supervision, apply basic ascent and descent techniques, use blockers and descenders, change equipment at height, and participate in simple rescues, all following strict safety procedures. It is the starting point for accessing job opportunities in wind farms, offshore platforms, industry and construction.

Level 2 is for experienced technicians who already have certified hours in Level 1. With Level 2, the technician can work autonomously, supervising Level 1 colleagues, planning more complex jobs and executing intermediate rescues. To move from Level 1 to Level 2, at least 1,000 registered and verified hours of work are required.

Level 3 is the advanced level of IRATA. The Level 3 technician can manage rope access equipment, plan complete vertical work operations and complex rescues, carry out safety assessments and coordinate large projects. Access to Level 3 requires an additional 1,000 hours of documented work and demonstrable experience in complex rescues.

The IRATA certification is valid for three years, after which it is necessary to carry out the recertification to maintain the current status and to be able to continue working as an authorized technician.

Is it difficult to pass Level 1?

IRATA is not an impossible course or reserved for athletes. It is demanding, yes, but accessible to anyone with motivation, good attitude and ability to learn.
No previous experience is required for Level 1: everything you need you will learn in training. The exam is divided into a practical and a theoretical test, where the techniques learned during the course week are evaluated.
